Peace Day Celebration Candlelight Vigile

In a series of ssevents,commemorating the African Union Year of Peace and Security and to celebrate the Peace Day, the Ethiopian Foreign Relations Strategic Studies Institute (institute) in partnership with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) have organised a candlelight vigil. The event will take place on the evening of the eve of the Peace Day, on 20 September, 2010. The Mayor of the City Government of Addis Ababa, H.E Ato Kuma Demekssa and officials of the AU, institute and the ISS and other institutions will be present at the event. During this event, the Mayor of Addis Ababa and other partners will extend messages of peace, and name a street or square as Peace Street or Peace Square in the city.

 

 

Peace Day Messages

On the commemoration of the Peace Day, the Ethiopian Foreign Relations Strategic Studies Institute (institute) in partnership with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) have organized a half day event dedicated for brief and direct peace statements by key relevant institution and personalities. Peace messages will be read at the event by high officials of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the Government of Ethiopian, religious leaders and the institute and the ISS. Peace Message by Prominent Personalities and Institutions

Addis Ababa, 15 September 2010 – Prominent personalities and representatives of institutions working for the realization of peace and security in Africa will deliver their peace messages as part of the celebration of the Peace Day, on September 21, 2010 at the Sheraton Addis Hotel. Peace messages will be read at the event by high officials of the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the Government of Ethiopian, religious leaders and the institute and the ISS. The event is jointly organized by the Ethiopian Foreign Relations Strategic Studies Institute (institute) in collaboration with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS). The program intends to support the AU in its ‘2010 Make Peace Happen and Beyond’ campaign and enhance greater public awareness the Year of Peace and Security within the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa and the public at large. It is reminded that the African Heads of States and Governments declared 2010 as the year of peace and security for Africa. institute is an autonomous think-tank institute working on policy research, capacity building and training to promote cooperation and partnership between Ethiopia and the International Community. institute and ISS have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 28 2007 to conduct a joint research, seminars, capacity buildings and information exchange programs. The bilateral cooperation of the two Institutes is flourishing in the area of peace, good governance, democracy, climate change and natural resources management.

 

 

 

Peace Day Concept Note

On 31 August 2009, the Assembly of the African Union (AU) meeting in Tripoli declared 2010 to be A Year of Peace and Security in Africa. The main message of the Year of Peace and Security is, 2010 Make Peace Happen. Furthermore, in its recent Kampala Summit, the Assembly of the African Union [AU Assembly/ AU/DEC. 275 (XIV)] called on partners including the Institute for Peace and Security (ISS) to work in partnership with the AU towards the realisation of the Year of Peace. Paragraph 9 of the Tripoli Declaration states that the main objective of the Year of Peace and Security is to show the commitment of African countries to deal once and for all with the scourge of conflict and violence on our continent, acknowledging our shortcomings and errors, committing our resources and our best people, and missing no opportunity to push forward the agenda of conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping and post-conflict reconstruction.
